Our History

For more than fifty years, South Derbyshire Music Centre has brought young people together through the power of music.

The story of SDMC begins with Philip King MBE, who founded the South Derbyshire Music Centre more than five decades ago. Philip was passionate about music education and believed strongly in giving young people the opportunity to learn, perform and discover the joy of making music together.
His vision created much more than a place to rehearse. It created a musical community where young people could develop their talents, build confidence, make lifelong friendships and experience the excitement of performing as part of an ensemble.

Philip's contribution to music education was recognised with the award of an MBE, reflecting the lasting impact he had on generations of young people across South Derbyshire and beyond.

A Growing Musical Community
Over the years, SDMC has continued to grow and evolve while remaining true to the principles on which it was founded. What began as a local music centre has developed into a thriving organisation offering opportunities for young musicians of all ages and abilities.

Today, SDMC brings together a wide range of bands, choirs and ensembles. Members have the opportunity to learn from experienced tutors, rehearse alongside other young musicians and perform at concerts and events throughout the local community.

Our performances have always been an important part of SDMC life. From concerts and Christmas celebrations to civic occasions and community events, our young musicians have shared their music with audiences across the area, creating memories and experiences that stay with them long after they leave the Music Centre.

Looking to the Future
We are proud of our history and of the foundations laid by Philip King. As we look to the future, we remain committed to continuing his vision and creating opportunities for many more generations of young musicians to discover the joy of music.
