Celebrating the Success of Our Members
At South Derbyshire Music Centre (SDMC), we are incredibly proud of everything our members achieve. Success comes in many forms, from performing in a first concert and passing music examinations to representing the county, earning national recognition and securing places at specialist music schools.
We believe every achievement deserves to be celebrated, and we love sharing the successes of our students both within our music centre and with the wider community.
Examination Success
Our students work incredibly hard throughout the year, and we’re always delighted to celebrate their examination achievements.
Congratulations to:
Lucy H for achieving Grade 5 Music Theory with Distinction.
Thomas R for achieving Grade 5 Music Theory with Merit.
Thomas R for achieving Grade 5 Clarinet.
These fantastic results reflect the dedication, commitment and enthusiasm of both our students and their teachers.
Congratulations, Rafe!
We’re incredibly proud of Rafe, who was awarded a Blue Peter Badge for his musical achievements.
To earn this prestigious award, Rafe submitted a video of himself performing on his pBone, answered questions about his musical journey and explained why music is so important to him.
Receiving a Blue Peter Badge is a wonderful achievement, and we’re delighted that Rafe’s passion for music has been recognised nationally.
County Ensemble Success
Many of our members successfully audition for ensembles organised by the Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership.
Students from SDMC recently attended the Derby & Derbyshire Schools’ Orchestra residential course at Whitmoor, with Effie returning the following week to perform with the Derby City & County Youth Orchestra.
These residential courses provide fantastic opportunities to rehearse and perform alongside talented young musicians from across the county, develop new musical skills and build lasting friendships.
Beyond South Derbyshire Music Centre
We’re incredibly proud when our students continue their musical journey beyond SDMC.
Congratulations to Sophia H, who has been a long-standing member of South Derbyshire Music Centre, performing in many of our bands and choirs.
Sophia has secured a place at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester—an outstanding achievement and a reflection of her hard work, dedication and musical talent.
We wish Sophia every success as she begins this exciting new chapter and look forward to following her musical journey.
Learning Beyond the Rehearsal Room
Music is about so much more than weekly rehearsals.
Throughout the year, our members enjoy a wide range of additional musical experiences, including workshops, residential courses, community performances and collaborative projects.
Recently, students, staff and trustees from SDMC took part in a steel pan workshop, giving everyone the opportunity to learn a new instrument, experience a different style of music and enjoy making music together.
These experiences broaden our members’ musical knowledge while encouraging confidence, creativity and teamwork.
Community Partnerships
We are proud to work alongside local organisations and community ensembles, giving our members opportunities to perform in a variety of settings.
Recently, students and staff from SDMC joined Gresley Colliery Band for the annual Whit Friday Marches, travelling north to take part in the famous brass band marches and local band contests. It was a fantastic day of music-making, friendship and community spirit, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Working alongside established community ensembles provides invaluable performance experience and inspires our young musicians to continue developing their skills.
Every Achievement Matters
At South Derbyshire Music Centre, success isn’t measured only by grades or awards.
Whether it’s learning your first notes, performing in your first concert, joining a new ensemble, passing an exam, representing the county, receiving national recognition or gaining a place at a specialist music school, every achievement is something to be proud of.
We are committed to encouraging every member to reach their full potential and celebrating every milestone along the way.
We look forward to sharing many more success stories as our students continue their musical journeys and inspire the next generation of musicians.
